First Nebraska Credit Union is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative. We offer many of the same services you find at other financial institutions, however we are motivated by service rather than profit.
At FNCU, our mission is “to provide professional services for the benefit of our members while reinforcing the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people.’” We exist to strengthen the financial well-being of our members.
We are owned and operated by our members – their credit union savings represents a “share” in the cooperative. The benefits of membership are returned to our members, with better rates and lower fees to provide significant savings! Members are insured by NCUA to at least $250,000.
We are proud to be highly rated by DepositAccounts.com, independent third party company. We were also ranked in the top 200 Credit Unions in the United States five out of six years (2016-2021), for “exceptional fiduciary responsibility” by DepositAccounts.com. Through 2021, this independent third party evaluated the financial health of every federally insured credit union in the United States.
We currently serve more than 17,000 members, including about 170 select employee groups, and people in the education and medical fields throughout the state of Nebraska and Iowa. FNCU is the 8th largest credit union in Nebraska, with more than $185 million in assets. View our annual report.
Our History
First Nebraska Credit Union was founded in 1964 to provide benefits for employees and their family members of smaller businesses that could not provide benefits of their own credit union. Over the years a number of credits unions have merged to become part of First Nebraska, providing us with a very diverse membership. This includes serving educators with the merger of Educators Credit Union in 2000 – with roots going back to 1932. Other mergers included credit unions for Nebraska Methodist, Lutherans, World Insurance, Physician’s Mutual, Alegent, First Data, Greater Omaha, and most recently, Construction Industries Credit Union and Lincoln USDA FCU.
Our charter has been changed to be more inclusive by expanding membership to students and people in healthcare or education in Nebraska and Iowa. Then in 2016, we were able to open to the community. View our membership eligibility here.
